Cardigan Craft Trail. Open Vase, Flared Bowl and Larger Low Footed Bowl
As part of the Craft Festival Wales Cardigan Town Trail.
11th September - 11th October, The Albion, Cardigan.
Created and curated by Justine Allison, to accompany Craft Festival Wales at Cardigan Castle, the Town Trail celebrates the town’s vibrant independent businesses while showcasing exceptional contemporary craft from Wales. This year, seven makers who have previously won awards at Craft Festival Wales have been invited to create brand-new works especially for the Trail, each inspired by one of seven Welsh words reflecting the experience of home.
Home is more than a place. More than bricks and mortar, home is a feeling, a quiet language of welcome, warmth and lingering memories. It is found in the objects we treasure, the stories we carry and the landscapes that shape us.
This year’s Craft Festival Wales Town Trail explores those emotions through seven special commissions: seven artists, seven places and seven moments that celebrate what it means to feel at home in this very special corner of West Wales.
Our makers were asked to respond to these words that take us home.
Aelwyd / Hearth
Nourishment/ Maeth
Atcof / Memory
Cynefin / Habitat
Cysur / Comfort
Hiraeth / Longing
Tirwedd / Landscape
A thrown and softly fluted open Vase, Flared Bowl and a softly fluted Larger low Footed Cup.
Both made from a 2 to 1 clay blend to celebrate my 30 year journey in Ceramics(I started my degree in Falmouth in 1996 but didn't become a full time potter until 2013). 20 years spent in Cornwall and now 10 years in Wales. The blend comprises of 2 parts DSS) stoneware(Dobles Standard Stoneware) from the North Coast of Cornwall (Which has been constant during my making) plus 1 part of a locally dug clay from the woods close to our home here in Cilycwm, Wales. The body has a very rich colour and texture. I minimally refined the local clay and used it pretty much straight from the ground.
The Bowl and Footed Cup are glazed with my standard mixed wood ash glaze which has reacted beautifully to the very iron rich clay blend.
The Vase has a Cornish Stone and Dolomite glazed interior with additional ash glaze on the rim.
